Lacking Inspiration

March 18, 2009

To be perfectly honest, it’s quite surprising that Ms. Marvel has lasted for three years.  Brian Reed had some great ideas starting out the series, but it hasn’t really developed since the beginning of the Secret Invasion tie-ins, and the Cru story arc didn’t yield as much as expected.  It’s a pretty stale series.  I used to call it the most underrated comic that Marvel produced.  But that was in the first year and a half.  Ghazi Rashid continues to show the power of Ascension, and we catch up with the little tease offered at the end of Secret Invasion.  And what’s going to happen next issue?  In some way, shape, or form, Ms. Marvel will die.  And the issue after that, Moonstone will take over.  Goody.  Like I want to see a whole series devoted to Moonstone.

This issue also attempts to try and bring some emotional drama to the series by revealing that one of Ms. Marvel’s associates is actually working with Ghazi.  But since I have no investment in those characters, I don’t really care.  The fact is that the series ultimately failed to move past its origins.  It failed to develop a good supporting cast, failed to develop her character, and failed to show anything worthwhile.  I’d have to say that Brian Michael Bendis gets Ms. Marvel a lot better than Brian Reed.  Yes, this is more of my new love for Bendis.  Pat Olliffe is a great artist, but the art alone doesn’t save this dying series.  I wouldn’t be surprised if it got canceled shortly after Moonstone takes over.  And don’t even get me started on her costume on the cover.

Plot: 7.7      Art: 8.8      Dialogue: 7.9      Overall: 7.8
